RESOURCES AND MATERIALS FOR TEACHING ENGLISH TO ADOLESCENTS AND ADULTS

There are 5 important components in language instruction and they are: students, teachers, materials, teaching methods and evaluation.

We are going to talk about materials. Materials are resources or aids used by teachers to help them in their lesson effectively. Teaching materials are designed to make lessons interesting, make learning easy, enable everyone in a classroom situation to participate actively, help learners to relate what is being taught to real life situations.

TYPES OF TEACHING MATERIALS:
  • ·         Charts
  • ·         Maps
  • ·         Diagrams
  • ·         Books
  • ·         Overhead projectors
  • ·         TV and videos
  • ·         Slide projectors
  • ·         Blackboards/Chalkboards/Flip Charts
  • ·         Chalk/Felt pens/markers
  • ·         Using role play

RESOURCES WE CAN USE  FOR TEACHING PAST SIMPLE TO TEENAGERS

ACTIVITY 1

Warm up: Students observe the following video from the British Counsil about  regular and irregular verbs

Middle Phase: Students have to write the verbs found in the video and they have to write a poem using those verbs.

Final Phase: The created poem has to be uploaded in the platform www.edmodo.com , so everybody can watch it online.

Students choose a poem from another classmate, and for next class, they will have to socialize all their poems and it will be interaction in the class.

ACTIVITY 2

Pronunciation Puzzle

In this activity taken from the web:
(http://www.pearsonlongman.com/ae/download/spectrum/pdfs/book2/sp2_pronpuzz.pdf) , Students will learn and apply a basic past tense pronunciation rule. This activity should be introduced after students have studied  pronunciation: "How do you say"

Students will be given a worksheet with the activity.

The teacher will explain the rules of the game: This is a pronunciation puzzle and the answer is related to how you pronounce certain verbs in their base forms and in their past tense.

Students will have about 20 minutes to fill in the chart and answer the puzzle question. They will be provided with the answer key.

Students will choose verbs from the puzzle list and create a real or imaginary story in simple past tense.

Finally, students will have to upload their stories in the platform www.edmodo.com, so everybody else can watch them at home.

ACTIVITY 3

GHOSTS
Communicative game for reviewing past tense

Step 1: Divide the class into 3 teams

Step 2: Draw the above stick figures on the whiteboard. Each team has 3 lives.

Step 4: Brainstorm past tense verbs.  Explain the rules:

A team loses a life if:

* They repeat a verb already used
* They make a grammar mistake
*They take too long
*They make a ridiculous sentence

The idea is that the first team starts with the word "First", the second team "Next", the third team "Then". Return to the first for "After that" and the second for "Finally" and continue with each team making past tense sentences.
Every time you come round to "First" the story can start in a new situation.

Step 5. The team that lose three lives die and become  ghosts. The last team alive is the winner.

RESOURCES WE CAN USE  FOR TEACHING PAST SIMPLE     TO ADULTS

ACTIVITY 1

Learning Through music

Students watch the vídeo from YouTube Summer of '69 from Bryam Admas.

Students will be given a worksheet with the lyrics of the song. They will have to put the given verbs in past simple.

Students will be allowed to play the song again, so they can write those verbs in the correct space.

ACTIVITY 2.

This resource can be challenging and a fun way for students to practice past simple.
Learners will be organized in groups of 4students. Each group will receive a time expression card and a verb card.

Cut the cards as indicated, separate into 2 piles and then shuffle.

Students are going to make true Past simple sentences about themselves.

Put the time expression cards face down on the desk and share out the verb cards equally between the students of the group.

Students take turns to turn over a time expression card and then try to make a true Past simple sentence matching one of the verb cards.

The other participants of the group must determine if the answer is true and grammatically correct.

The aim of the game is to be the first student to get rid of the verb cards.

To attain successful learning, teachers need to incorporate various materials and resources to their teaching methodology . The main thing is to know how and when to use them in order to achieve teaching and learning goals making them relevant and important to the learners.

It is very important to talk to our students and find out their real needs so we can adapt the class to achieve not only their needs but also their interests, goals, and dreams.
